In this dream, it is just before dark and I am driving a horse drawn buggy. We are on the outskirts of a small mountain town and while there are lights in town, soon we will leave it and be traveling in the dark. There are cars coming towards us; many of which have their headlights on.
It is of concern to me that the buggy is not equipped with headlights, so once darkness fully falls it will be extremely difficult to see the way.
I then notice that the reins are not made of leather, but are comprised only of a few layers of food grade plastic wrap (think Saran Wrap), which merely stretch when I pull on them.
The horse is fidgety, nervous and becoming difficult to control, which is sure to become a very dangerous situation if it cannot quickly be resolved. It is reacting fearfully to headlights of the vehicles that are coming towards us, which it perceives as unfamiliar, frightening bursts of bright light. Further, it is clearly not receiving the direction and reassurance that I am attempting to send through what are essentially nonexistent reins.
I am however able to get the horse to come to a stop. I quickly climb down from the buggy and try to reassure the frightened animal. I check the rein connection to the bit, hoping to find a way to make these stretchy, weightless, useless reins effective. I then see that where the reins connect to the bit, while the buckles themselves are attached to leather rather than plastic wrap, it is cracked, dry and ready to break.
Significance of equipment
The “blinders” on the driving harness bridle were designed to prevent the horse from being able to see anything. Our eyes are located in the front of our head, which allows us to see the area in front of us; however, their eyes are located on the sides of their head. As a result, they have a blind spot in front of them and must turn their head in order to see anything that falls within that area. Blinders prevent them from seeing to the side and when combined with their natural frontal “blind spot”, this equipment renders them unable to see – they are indeed blind.
Because of this equipment, driving horses are utterly dependent upon the direction and communication of their master. The reins are therefore literally the “communications lifeline” between the driver and the horse.
Harness reins are necessarily made of thick leather, or of multiple layers of high strength, nylon webbing that are sewn together. These materials have the weight and rigidity required to convey the commands sent from the driver to the horse.
Reins made of stretchy, fragile, weightless plastic wrap would be entirely incapable of providing direction, comfort or confidence to the horse. It would feel no guidance through the bit and what it cannot feel, it will not know to respond to or obey. Unable to feel a connection and reassurance from the driver through the reins and being utterly incapable of seeing where it is going, fear will naturally result. The horse will feel “entrapped” by the buggy, to which it is firmly affixed by the harness and buggy shafts.
If there is no substance to or clear guidance available through the reins and the horse and master do not have a strong enough connection that it may fully be controlled by its confidence in the voice of the master, its natural instinct will be to go into the extremely dangerous state of full-blown panic!
Yet, it does not have to be that way, for the more highly trained an animal becomes and the more it trusts its master, the more it will gain comfort and confidence from the nuance of voice commands rather than relying fully on what communication it receives through the reins. Horses, which have advanced in their training, are successfully directed by verbal command alone.
In essence, they have come to the point in their training and relationship with the master, where they HAVE FAITH in the master. They display an intense loyalty and commitment to him for they find comfort and enjoyment in their relationship with a good master. Through means of their ongoing, extensive training, they are mentally stronger, more capable and ready to handle situations that other, less well-trained horses simply cannot.
As was true of the warhorses of old, which would gallop willingly and determinedly directly into the face of “hell on earth”, the wish of the master is their pleasure to fulfill. They love and obey their master and fully entrust themselves to the masters’ care. They faithfully and willingly serve him, even when directed to charge directly into the face of great danger and chaos. In addition to those who worked in harness pulling chariots or cannon, some of the warhorses of old performed military feats which should be compared to human marital arts moves – such as the “airs above the ground”, performed by the famous Lipizzaner stallions.
In this dream I had two significant concerns. The first was not knowing how to safely navigate when driving in total darkness. The other was being unable to retain control the horse, which was nearing a state of full-blown panic.
There is no such thing as darkness to God – He is light. If we rely upon Him, the Holy Spirit can be our “headlights”, illuminating the darkest places in life, so that we may see the way to safely travel through them!
For the Christian, our “reins” are the Written Word of God – the Bible. When read as it was written, our communications lifeline is indeed sure, strong and reliable. However, the reins become as ineffective as plastic wrap when we attempt to contort scripture to instead read what we would prefer it to, until it seemingly supports doing just about anything. (I.e. grace “covers” intentional rebellion = willful sin.)
The plastic wrap reins also represent the flimsy, stretchy, fake and therefore useless “faith” of multitudes of people who merely self-identify as “Christian”. This is no different from a person self-identifying as another race or gender. Identifying yourself as something you are not does not make you the real deal any more than a bulldog can identify itself as being a greyhound and hope to win a race against the real thing.
These people are greatly desirous of obtaining the promises while having no desire for The Promiser Himself, “following Jesus” only in so much as it will not inconvenience them or require them to sacrifice that which the world has to offer! (in friendship with the world).
Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. James 4:4
Our good master, the Holy Spirit communicates with us using voice commands, by which He can successfully guide us through the most challenging twists and turns of life. This is especially true when we are traveling through the darkest places.
God has given us free will and He will not violate that, by figuratively putting a bit in our mouth or blinders over our eyes in an attempt to force our direction of travel. Satan however, is no such gentleman!
Jesus has made it clear that it is in our best interest to put blinders upon ourselves, not looking to the left or right but keeping our eyes firmly fixed upon Him. Fortunately, unlike the horse, we have no frontal blind spot that would prevent us from seeing Him. We can however, make the conscious choice to ignore what He commands us.
In the coming time of turmoil, tribulation, chaos, destruction and death, if we do not have our eyes firmly upon our Commander, we will suffer great confusion, panic and loss, with many abandoning Him entirely – to their eternal destruction.
If we put our heart and soul into learning His heart and His ways and carefully listen to His quiet verbal command (still small voice), we will successfully navigate through life, especially when the way is most difficult, frightening or seemingly enveloped by the darkness, as is even now increasingly coming upon the world.
We must intentionally, fully rely upon Him for navigation or we will assuredly veer off the road and crash as we in full panic, desperately run from what we do not understand and greatly fear.
We must attentively listen for each and every order given to us by Jesus, the Commander of Heavens Armies, obeying even if we cannot see the way and when everything within us screams that we’re heading into danger as we humanly understand it.
If we are in such a relationship with Him, we’ll not only personally make it to our eternal destination, we will arrive there, proudly pulling a carriage full of others who would not have made it to Him without our faith, trust and obedience.
Moreover, not unlike the Lipizzaner warhorses, we will literally kick enemy fanny and take territory for our incredible Master!
